The vent above the table has been running at whatever arctic setting facilities landed on in April, and you glance down and realise your shirt is hiding nothing. Your thermostat is set for a hypothetical person from sixty years ago, and facilities will not be moving it for you.
What actually helps, ranked honestly
Fabric weight and weave. Dress shirting mostly lives between 80 and 120 GSM: under 100 you are in show-through territory, at 120 and above meaningfully more opaque. Weave matters as much as weight — a twill's diagonal float and an oxford's basket weave are both more opaque than a plain poplin of the same weight, which is why the crispest, lightest white poplin you own is the worst offender. Pinpoint oxford is the sensible middle. Some shirtmakers publish an opacity rating per fabric; read it before buying another white shirt.
Colour and texture. Anything that is not a flat pale solid gives the eye something else to do — a light-blue check, a fine stripe, an end-on-end, a heather. The pattern breaks up the surface, and darker shirts are more opaque simply because there is more dye in the yarn. The catch is obvious: this fix works by quietly shrinking your wardrobe.

Layering. A knit over a collared shirt is the most reliable non-adhesive fix in an office, and it solves the actual temperature too. A merino crewneck or a cable-knit adds a second layer with structure, not just more cloth. The limitation is the calendar — and it is no use the moment the jumper comes off.
Undershirts, and what they do not solve. A layer helps, but two things get missed. Under a pale dress shirt, a white undershirt is the thing people actually notice: skin is not white, so a white tee reads as a bright rectangle underneath, while grey or a mid-tone is far less visible. And a thin, close-fitting undershirt does not stop the reflex — it relocates the outline one layer out. Ribbed or heavier cotton helps; lightweight and clingy mostly does not.
Desk-level tricks. Redirect the vent if the louvres move. Keep a jacket over your chair for meetings. Hot drink before the cold conference room. An under-desk heater is the most effective thing most people never try. All of it works — none of it survives the walk to a meeting room on another floor.
The fix that removes the variable
Everything above manages the room or the fabric. A patch manages the thing the room is acting on.
